They are often carried directly into the field to identify the possible presence of radioactive material and to locate its presence. Many identify the nature of the isotope and give good indications of both the dose being received by the operator and the identity of the isotope(s) present.
These instruments are mainly installed in a fixed laboratory environment or in the field, mounted on an apparatus, to perform a well defined purpose. Additional instruments, such as computer, ADC or power supply may be required for operation.
